Start by knowing what kind of pool you want. If you can find a contractor who specializes in building the kind of pool you want, you'll save time and money and get a better result.
Get recommendations. Talk to people in your neighborhood who have pools. Both glowing testimonials and sincere warnings can be invaluable in your selection process.
Talk to the Better Business Bureau. The BBB can tell you how long a contractor has been in business, which is important. They can also fill you in on complaints filed against the contractor, and whether they've been resolved.
Check references. Schedule appointments with your top candidates and discuss the project in detail. Get references and check them. Don't sign a contract with any contractor until you've met with at least two or three potential choices.
Trust your gut and use your head. If a contractor demands payment in cash, offers an unrealistically low price or a super-fast build time, cross him off your list. Other warning signs include asking for a large payment in advance, pressuring you to make a quick decision, or urging you to get financing through a particular company.
