How the Three In-Ground Pool Materials Differ

The choice of material for construction of an in-ground pool is essential. The durability, longevity, and maintenance of your pool can depend on the material used. This is why before starting the project, it is important to know you are choosing the right material based on your needs and preferences.

Concrete

This is the most commonly used material for in-ground pool building. Concrete pools are durable, usually lasting for 15 years. They can also be customized to create a pool tailored to your taste and needs. You should be aware, however, that concrete pools require heavy maintenance, requiring some consideration when budgeting for your pool.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass is becoming evermore popular because of its notable advantages. A non-porous material, fiberglass isn’t sensitive to chemicals found in pool cleansers. It also resists bacteria that naturally gravitate to porous surfaces where they grow and breeds. Fiberglass is easier to maintain overall, though it’s not as customizable as other materials.

Vinyl

This material is the most affordable option. These pools use a vinyl liner and can last for 5-10 years. Vinyl is also flexible and customizable, allowing you to achieve the exact specifications you desire. The downside, however, is vinyl's vulnerability to punctures. Accordingly, repair of vinyl is comparatively costly.

Each of the three main materials used for in-ground pools possess their own set of pros and cons. Understanding their characteristics will guide in you in choosing the best one for your home.
